Accessibility Statement for bareyourrare.org
Hi, I’m the person behind bareyourrare.org—a small personal project sharing thoughts, stories, and resources on rare conditions and related topics.
I want this site to be as welcoming and usable as possible for everyone, including people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, larger text, or other assistive tools. Accessibility matters to me, so I’m actively working to make the site follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA conformance.
My goal is WCAG 2.2 Level AA, and I’m also trying to apply some Level AAA success criteria where it makes sense and doesn’t break the flow (like avoiding images of text wherever possible).
Current status The site is partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 Level AA. Most core content and navigation work well, but it’s a personal WordPress site (using the Astra theme), so it’s still a work in progress. I test and improve things over time rather than claiming perfect compliance right now.
Known limitations Here are the main areas that aren’t fully there yet:
- Some videos autoplay without a clear pause/stop control right away, which can be disruptive for people sensitive to motion or sound.
- A few interactive elements (like certain custom buttons or forms added via plugins) may not be 100% keyboard-navigable or have perfect focus indicators in all cases.
- Older posts or embedded media might have missing or incomplete alt text, captions, or transcripts—I’m fixing these as I revisit content.
These are honest gaps I’m aware of, and I’m chipping away at them with updates.
How I test I do a mix of:
- Manual testing (navigating with keyboard only, using screen readers like NVDA or VoiceOver, zooming to 200–400%, checking color contrast).
- Browser dev tools (Lighthouse accessibility audits in Chrome, WAVE toolbar, axe DevTools).
- Occasional checks with free online contrast checkers and heading/structure validators.
I don’t have formal third-party audits yet (it’s just me!), but I follow WCAG quick-reference guides and common WordPress accessibility checklists.
Feedback welcome If you run into any barriers while using the site, or if something is hard to access/understand, please let me know—I genuinely appreciate the help in making this better. Just head to the Contact page and drop a message. I’ll get back to you as soon as I can (usually within a few days).
Thanks for visiting, and thanks in advance for any feedback. I’m learning and improving along the way.
